Today, I’m going to give the recipe for my favourite Japanese dessert, which I never fail to make for any occasion. I learned this from a Japanese friend of one of my neighbours. Banana tempura is a popular dessert in some Asian cuisines, particularly Japanese cuisine.
It consists of sliced bananas that are coated in a tempura batter and then deep-fried until they become crispy and golden brown. It is often served with a drizzle of honey, syrup, or powdered sugar, making it a sweet and crunchy treat.
Banana tempura is a delicious and indulgent dessert enjoyed for its contrasting textures of crispy batter and soft, sweet banana. However, I prefer making it in an air fryer to keep it healthy. Let’s see a detailed banana tempura recipe:

Procedure For Making Banana Tempura
- First of all, you have to preheat your air fryer for 5 minutes at 350°F (180°C)
- Then, prepare the bananas: peel the ripe bananas and cut them into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Place them aside
- To make the tempura batter, combine the all-purpose flour, cornflour, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl while gently stirring the mixture, and gradually add the ice-cold sparkling water or club soda. Stir until the batter is smooth. It’s okay if it’s lumpy; don’t overmix
- Then comes coating the bananas; dip each banana slice into the tempura batter to coat it evenly and allow any surplus battery to drain.
- The next step is air frying; to prevent sticking, lightly coat the air fryer basket with cooking spray and arrange the battered banana slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid crowding; you may need to do this in bunches.
- Air fry the banana slices for 5 to 7 minutes at 350°F (180°C), flipping halfway through the cooking time. They should be golden brown and crispy when done.
- Once the frying process is complete, remove the banana tempura from the air fryer and place it on a dish lined with paper towels to soak up any leftover oil.
- Drizzle the banana tempura with honey or syrup while heated for extra sweetness. This step is optional, depending on your taste.
- Crispy air-fried banana tempura is ready. Serve immediately, and enjoy!
